"What's your brother like?" Kale asks. The landscape is novel and welcomed. He sort of misses the constant farmland he grew up on.

"Er, he's a doctor of zoology, in charge of reintroducing wildlife, cattle and beasts of burden back to the planet. He's a little shorter than me and has blue eyes, and is a little stockier, and other than that looks almost identical to me. He's about three years younger than me?"

"What happened to the wildlife? Trev would love to meet him, I'm sure. He wanted to go to university for that sort of thing."

"A lot of it died when the world got bombed. I mean, I don't really get why Lyman is reintroducing things like Snow Wraiths, or Monster Crows, or Kazic Wolves, but still."

"You need to have a full ecosystem which includes top predators. Even if they're not so friendly. This I learned on the farm."

"This world never had a balanced ecosystem. It didn't even have herbivores until we introduced them, just calorivores, photovores and carnivores."

"It must have worked some how. Even if it didn't have herbivores."

"Photovores ate the light, calorivores ate the heat, carnivores ate the photovores and calorivores."

"See! They didn't even need herbivores." He smiles.

"Yeah. And the planet evolved some of the most brutal predators ever. I was raised here, mind, so I ended up with a lot of first hand experience of horrifying predators growing up."

"I got gored by cattle a few times. But mostly that was because I was being stupid. Garqui isn't that known for anything but farms." He pauses for a second as if thinking. "And ... yup. Farms."

"My childhood wasn't as exciting as it sounds. I was being raised to be a nerfherder."

"I herded nerf. We had a small herd to nerfherd." Kale giggles at that. He's feeling silly. "And drove tractors. Lots of beans. We grew lots and lots of beans. All sorts of beans."

Atton laughs, sliding an arm around Kale's waist.

"Well, nerfherding on Kazic is a little different. You have to graze in the warmer areas, which is where the big calorivores are likely to be - like Sweepers - and that draws predators, and then they try to eat your nerf. S'not good."

"We just had nerf tippers." There is comfortable leaning. "And the occasional inspection by the Empire."

"Were they inspecting the farms or the farmboys?"

Atton is so innocent. So innocent.

Kale elbows him. "They were inspecting everything. Looking for Force users and bad beans."

"See, now, I'd just inspect the farmboys. In detail, because there's no point being an inspector if you're not going to be thorough."

Atton is still very innocent.

Innocent is returned with innocence. "If we little farm boys stayed around to be inspected we'd be sent off to the Empire to be turned into whatever it is the Emperor does to young handsome Force users."

"Now, that'd just be a waste."

"Which is why we hid from the inspectors."

"S'considerate of you."

"I liked living, personally." He reaches up to play with Atton's hair.

Atton leans down to give Kale slightly easier access, grinning.

"I'm fond of you living too."

The hair is fondled.

"Where are we staying then, in this desolate place belonging to your brother? It's not the basement is it?"
