Atton is in the Paradox Squadron hanger (Force knows how they managed to get a hanger into the upper floors at the bar, Atton just isn't going to ask), doing repairs on his Dart.

(The Dart is a good ship. A compact, one-person light fighter in an arrowhead shape, coloured dark grey, with as many guns as the Republic's engineers could fit on it. It's one of the smaller ships there, with only the A-Wings being smaller, and even then not by much.

The Paradox Squadron symbol is etched on one wing, along with a tally of kills which is somewhat astronomical.)

This involves lying on his stomach on the top of the ship, curved over the cockpit, in jeans, an undershirt (both oil-soaked) and a rather large welding mask, poking at an open panel with something that sparks every so often.

"Shhhh, shhhh, darling. S'okay, we're nearly there ..."

Atton laughs. "Ah, back end of nowhere. Kazic III, snowy planet. So far removed that Kazics are Near-Humans, not humans per se."

Headtilt. "A lot of Earth folks in the bar. Not many pilots, though."

"Well, there's my crew," she says with a shrug, and thinks of another pilot: one with red curls and wide blue eyes. "Although I'm here most, out of the fliers. And I'm ... friends with another, although he's strictly civilian."

Friends. Yeah.

"There's a lot of pilots from my universe, but they're mostly from the far future."

[can_finish_them]

"Have you met Trudy yet?" she asks. "She's military - and from my future, although I don't think she's from your 'verse."

"No. Have you met Wes Janson, Inyri Forge, Tycho Celchu?"

Kaidy shakes her head. "Maybe we should arrange something, for the sky-kids," she suggests, half-joking. "With five tonne of booze, obviously."

"There used to be socials, of a sort, for them," Atton smiles.

[can_finish_them]

"Really? I never knew that." Kaidy's smile is a little self-deprecating, but still amused. "I'm rather the new girl, still, I'm afraid."

"Well, there's always space in the hangar for more ships. And always will be, weirdly enough."

[can_finish_them]

She laughs.

"Milliways, huh? Talk about a madhouse." She wrinkles her nose, amused. "Which isn't to say I don't love the place."

(She wonders how her funny little civilian would fit in with the confident laid-back breed of military pilots that Milliways seems to welcome so easily; if he'd find somewhere to be comfortable or if he'd flail himself into silence. He'd probably be okay, she thinks, either eventually or after a few drinks. She wonders, nevertheless.)

"It's awesome. A bit frustrating at times, but still awesome."

[can_finish_them]

"Tell me about it." Kaidy cackles, amused. "Come to think of it, I know a lot of people like that, too."

"Anyone in particular come to mind?"

[can_finish_them]

"No-one you'd know, I think," she says. "But most of the people I'm supposed to be in charge of - supposed being definitely the key word here."

[stuck_mynock]

"Ugh. Being in charge of people. I could never handle that."

[can_finish_them]

"It was really, really bizarre at first," Kaidy confesses, "But you get used to it. At least, I did. Of course, it was easier back when the people who did the promoting weren't the people we're at war with."

"That - would make things difficult, yeah."

[can_finish_them]

Kaidy shrugs an 'it happens' kind of shrug.

"It was another fight. I have them a lot, so ... you know. But I think my crew and I understand each other quite well, these days."

"When I was still flying, my squadron had ways of solving fights. Competitions to see who could rack up the most kills in a battle, with forfeits; or just fighting it out."

[can_finish_them]

"We've done the fighting it out occasionally." Kaidy smirks a little; boxing lessons when she was young have a way of paying off when she needs them most. "But solving it through kills wouldn't really work, since we're not all fighter-pilots: my wing-woman used to be search-and-rescue, for starters."

"But that just means you'd always win."

[can_finish_them]

"True." Kaidy cackles again, soft and wicked. "But that tends to piss people off all over again."

[stuck_mynock]

"But then, you'll win those arguments, too."

[can_finish_them]

"Yeah, but, you know, call me crazy - but I kind of like having friends as well."

[stuck_mynock]

"I dunno, my friends seem to cope."

But then, a lot of Atton's friends treat him as you would treat a friendly, enthusiastic, but ultimately wild and potentially vicious animal - with caution, wry understanding, and a supply of food to hand to placate him.
